ABSTRAK

Listening is the ability to accurately receive messages in the communication process. It is often used in conjunction with the other skills of speaking, reading, and writing. Listening is not only a skill area in language performance, but is also a critical means of acquiring a second language. The research aims to find out students’ comprehension and their difficulties in listening story telling at MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin academic year 2012/2013. This research also notes some factor which influenced students’ difficulties in comprehending listening story telling. The subject of this research are some of the eleventh grade students at MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin and the object of the research is students’ comprehension in listening story telling of the eleventh grade at MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin. The data of this research are collected by achievement test, observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentary. Data processing in this research is divided into four phases, they are editing, coding, scoring, and classifying. Then, all the data are analyzed descriptively and quantitatively, and further, concluded inductively. The result of this research shows that students’ comprehension in listening story telling at MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin eleventh grade academic year 2012/2013 is fair, based on the calculation of mean of the students’ comprehension in listening story telling (55,14). Based on the result it can be seen that most of students have difficulties to answer some questions. The type of difficult question are question about gist-purpose (reason), followed by question about vocabulary, question about detailed information, question about gist-content (topic), and question about connecting content (predicting).
