ABSTRAK

Gender responsive teaching and learning material is very important element to reduce incident called gender stereotyping. In teacher-students interaction process, gender biased teaching and learning in the classroom is often reflected in a number of types of teaching and learning content of material with gender stereotyping. Several studies on gender bias in language textbook in several parts of the world have shown that gender bias and stereotyping still exist and are happening at schools. However, studies on gender analysis of the English language textbooks which are used in most Indonesian school have been scarce an unknown, and therefore are open to be studied. This article is a research report on the frecuency of use of masculine, feminine words and pronouns (she and he), and kinds main verbs related to each gender, and common gender stereotyping role of some selected SMP of junior high school English textbooks. Three junior high school English textbooks, that are currently used by Indonesia’s junior high schools, were selescted. Key words: gender stereotype, bias, English school textbook
