ABSTRAK

Muhammad Atho’illah. 2014. Students' Attitude towards Using English and Arabic Languages at the Eleventh Grade of MA Darul Hijrah Boarding School for Boys Cindai Alus Martapura Banjar Regency Academic Year 2012/2013. Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teachers Training. Advisor: Hj. Noor Maulidiyah, M. A. Keywords: language attitude, using of english, using of arabic, students, islamic boarding school, social psychology, sociolinguistic. The problem formulation of this study are: how is the students’ attitude towards English and Arabic at Darul Hijrah?, how do the students use English and Arabic at Darul Hijrah? and what language do the students prefer at Darul Hijrah? The sample of this study is 63 students of the eleventh grade of Islamic Senior High School / Madrasah Aliah (MA) of Darul Hijrah Islamic Boarding School. The objects of the study are students’ attitude towards English and Arabic, their loyalty, pride and awareness of the norm towards both languages through the positive or negative of their attitude towards both languages. To collect data, the writer uses observation and questionnaire techniques. Data processing in this study is divided into four phases: editing, coding, scoring and interpreting. Then, all the data are analyzed quantitatively, descriptively and concluded inductively. The results of this study are; the students’ attitude towards English and Arabic is positive. It is seen from the overall average/mean score through cognitive, affective and conative, the students at Darul Hijrah Islamic Boarding School are obligated to use English and Arabic as their communication tool in daily life. Their awareness to use English and Arabic as their tool for communicating to each others is based on the obligation. If they use Indonesia (Bahasa) or Banjarese in the boarding school, they get some punishment from language discipliners. The schedule for using English and Arabic in boarding school is managed by language discipliners. When the writer was observing to the location, the schedule is one week for using English and one week for using Arabic alternately and the students at Darul Hijrah prefer Arabic. It is seen from the overall mean score showed that the mean score towards Arabic is strongly positive, whereas the mean score towards English was positive, but not strong.
