ABSTRAK

Problem formulation in this research are how is the ability of the eighth grade students at MTsN 2 Gambut in academic year 2013/2014 in reading personal letter and where are the difficulties of in reading personal letter. The objectives of this research are to know the students’ ability in reading personal letter of eighth grade students at MTsN 2 Gambut in academic year 2013/2014 and to know their difficulties in reading personal letter. The population of this research is all of eighth grade students at MTsN 2 Gambut and the sample of this research is 135 students. To collect the data the writer just use objective test. Then, all the data are analyzed descriptively quantitatively and concluded inductively. The result of this research shows that the students ability in reading personal letter is categorized enough with mean score 64,97. This research also shows that their difficulties in reading personal letter are letter for friend type with students’ incorrect answer is 32,06%, thank you letter type with students’ incorrect answer is 28,60%, letter for teacher type with students’ incorrect answer is 19,04% and invitation letter type with students’ incorrect answer 20,30%. And the most difficult questions to be answered by the students are about specific information question in letter for friend type.
