Syatria Adymas Pranajaya. 2011. A Study of Error Analysis in Paragraph Writing of the Second Grade Students at MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin Academic Year 2010/2011. Thesis, English Department. Tarbiyah Faculty. Advisor: (I) Dra. Hj. Nida Mufidah, M.Pd, (II) Hj. Noor Maulidiyah, M.A This research describes a study of error analysis in paragraph writing of the second grade students at MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin academic year 2010/2011. The formulation of problems of this research are: (1) what are the types of errors in writing a recount paragraph made by the second grade students of MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin?, and (2) what are the possible causes of the errors in writing a recount paragraph made by the second grade students of MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin?. The subject of this research is 38 students of the second grade students of Language Program at MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin academic Year 2010/2011. The objects of the research are (1) the classification of the types of errors made by the second grade students of MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin, and (2) the causes of errors made by the second grade students of MAN 2 Model Banjarmasin. The data of this research are collected through written test to know the types of error, and interview to know the possible cause of the errors. After collecting the data, the writer analyzes the data, finds the students’ errors on the use of grammar, classifies the students’ errors into types i.e.; omission, addition, misformation, transitional signal, punctuation, and capitalization and describes the possible causes of students’ errors. The causes of the students’ errors were analyzed from the point of intralingual causes of errors recommended by Richard, i.e.; over generalization, ignorance of rules restrictions, incomplete application of rules, and false concepts hypothesized. Based on the result of this research, the students made six types of errors in writing composition, i.e.; transitional signal, punctuation, capitalization, omission, addition, and misformation. From six types of errors the highest error is misformation and the lowest is transitional signal. The causes of errors were over generalization, ignorance of rules restrictions, incomplete application of rules and false concept hypothesized. From the result of the tabulation the highest proportion was placed by the causes of over generalization and the lowest frequency was the causes of errors of false concept hypothesized. Finally, it is expected that the finding of this study will be useful for the teachers and the students themselves.
