Students’ Ability in Describing Composite Pictures by Using Past Continuous Tense of The Second Grade Students at State Islamic Junior High School Banjar Selatan (Mahligai) Banjarmasin Academic Year 2009/2010. Thesis, English Education Department. Islamic Education Faculty. Advisors: (I) Dr. H. Husnul Yaqin, M.Ed. (II) Drs. Saadillah, M.Pd. This research describes students’ ability in Describing Composite Pictures by Using Past Continuous Tense of The Second Grade Students at State Islamic Junior High School Banjar Selatan (Mahligai) Banjarmasin. The Problems of research are : How is the degree of the second grade students’ ability at State Islamic Junior High School Banjar Selatan (Mahligai) Banjarmasin in describing composite pictures by using past continuous tense and what factors influence the ability. The population in this research are all of the second grade students at State Islamic Junior High School Banjar Selatan (Mahligai) Banjarmasin academic year 2009/2010 with the total number 127 students. The sample in this research are 38 students (30%) from population calculated. In collecting data, the writer uses some techniques: written test, questionnaire, interview, observation, and documentary. Data processing in this study is divided into five phases: editing, coding, calculating frequency, tabulating and data interpretation. Then, all the data are analyzed by using descriptive quantitative and concluded by inductive method. The result of this study indicates that students’ ability of the second grade in Describing Composite Pictures by Using Past Continuous Tense of The Second Grade Students at State Islamic Junior High School Banjar Selatan (Mahligai) Banjarmasin is in good category with the score of mean 60,54, it is caused by some factors as follows: students’ internal factor; students’ interest that include in high category so, it influences on result of students’ learning. Students’ motivation that include high category, and students’ learning activity that include middle category, it also influence in their ability. Students’ external factors; teacher factors: such as teachers’ educational background and teachers’ experience in teaching English can be categorized in middle category. Facility factors; Students’ facilities are high category, of course it very influence on students’ ability in describing composite pictures by using past continuous tense.
