ABSTRAK

Rusydi Hanifi. 2011. Students’ Response towards the Teachers’ Instruction of Teaching English at the Language Center Program of Antasari State Institute for Islamic Studies Banjarmasin Academic Year 2010/2011. Thesis, English Department, Education Faculty. Advisors: (I) DR. Saifuddin Ahmad Husin, MA, (II) Puji Sri Rahayu, MA. This research is firstly driven by the researcher’s curiosity about students’ response towards teaching method of teachers who took their Master’s degree abroad. That is believed; the teachers of this kind apply different teaching method for their students based on their language learning ability and have specific approaches to motivate their students to learn. Then, it is also guided by the researcher’s interest in Krashen’s input and affective filter hypotheses. This research has three purposes: First, it aims to know how the teachers differentiate teaching method for the students based on their language learning abilities. Second, it is intended to investigate the specific approaches that the teachers use to motivate the students to learn English. Third, it is head for knowing the students’ response towards the teachers’ method of teaching. In collecting data, the researcher applies triangulation technique. This means that he makes a collaboration of several techniques of collecting data. They are classroom observation, interview with the classroom teachers, and questionnaire for the students. This way, he first conducts the observation. Then, he manages the interview and the questionnaire as the supports to the observation technique. Next, he analyzes all the data descriptively and qualitatively to find out the result. As the result, the researcher figures out that the teachers apply different teaching method and have specific approaches to their students such as: letting their students have questions during or after class, helping their students individually, engaging their students in active participation during classroom activities either individually or in groups, etc. after that, as the response, the students are apparently worked by those approaches which involve cooperation among them and are mostly not attracted to those of individual role. In addition, they are stimulated to pay attention to teachers’ explanation if the teachers use the language they know best – in this case, it is Indonesian. Based on the result, the researcher then suggests that every English teacher in Indonesia should consider their teaching method based on students’ response. Next, they also have to make account about the language they should use during classroom activities.
