Wardah Hayati, MA Techniques are the ways and means adopted by a teacher to direct the learners’ activities toward an objective. Techniques are the tools of the teacher. One of the most important techniques in reading is scanning techniques. Scanning is a technique of reading to find information quickly by sweeping the pages evenly, and then when it comes to the necessary part, eye movement stop. The eyes move quickly, jumped up and down and did not see the word for word. This thesis describes about Improving Students’ Reading Ability through Scanning at class VII b MTs Hidayatussalam Kecamatan satui Kabupaten Tanah bumbu Academic Year 2010/2011.This study intended to know was scanning can improve student reading ability. The subjects of this research were 24 students of seven grade students at Mts Hidayatussalam Kecamatan Satui Kabupaten Tanah Bumbu academic year 2010/2011. The data were collected through written test, observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentary. This study used three cycles. This consists of one meeting. First cycle in the means of student reading ability by using scanning techniques is 64.3. Then on the second cycle their achievements is 69.6 and the results of the third cycle showed an increase of 72.5. So there is an increase of student mastery and it is higher than their minimum standard of achievement which is 60. It can be concluded that scanning can improve students reading ability.
