ABSTRAK

Al Amin. 2011. The Fifth Semester Students’ Ability in Completing a Structure Test in the TOEFL Preparation Test at English Department of IAIN Antasari Banjarmasin Academic Year 2010-2011. Thesis. English Department, Tarbiyah Faculty. Advisors: (I) Dr. Saifuddin Ahmad Husin, MA, (II) Nani Hizriani, MA. Structure plays a very important role in teaching and learning English. Mastering structure makes students able to understand English and produce it. The fifth semester students of English department of Tarbiyah Faculty of IAIN Antasari are students who have been finishing their last Structure Subject Series. To know their understanding about structure learned, the writer is interested to conduct a research using the TOEFL Preparation test as a measurement. The problem formulation of this research are: How is the ability of the fifth semester students in completing a Structure test in the TOEFL Preparation test, what are the factors that influence Grammar score in the TOEFL Preparation test, what are the most difficult item tests done by the students. The subject of this research is 53 students of the fifth semester of English Department of Tarbiyah Faculty of IAIN Antasari Banjarmasin academic year 2010/2011. The object of the research is the ability of the fifth semester students in completing a Structure test in the TOEFL Preparation test, the factors that influence Grammar score in the TOEFL Preparation test, and the most difficult item tests done by the students. To collect the data, the writer uses some techniques such as observation, test, interview, and documentary. Data processing in this research is divided into four phases: editing, coding, classifying, and interpreting. Then, all the data are analyzed descriptively, qualitatively, and quantitavely and concluded inductively. The result of this research states that the ability of the fifth semester students in completing a Structure subject is in Fair Category because the average of the test result is 420. Factors that influence students’ scores are lack of exercise, limited materials, and teachers’ educational background. There are 10 most difficult item test, they are: Differ from and be Different from, Hyphenated Adjective, Negative Emphasis, Redundancy, Almost and almost all of the, Count Noun and Noncount Noun, Because and Because of, Transitive and Intransitive (Lay,Lie), Passive Sentence, Double Comparative
