ABSTRAK

Marasdiansyah.2015. The Correlation between Students’ Interest in Playing Scrabble and Students’ Vocabulary Mastery of the Eleventh Grade in MAN Kotabaru Academic Year 2014-2015. Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teachers Training. Advisor:Nurlaila Kadariyah, S.Ag., M.Pd. Keywords: Scrabble, students’interest, vocabulary mastery, correlation. This research describes the correlation between students’ interest in playing Scrabble and students’ vocabulary mastery of the eleventh grade in MAN Kotabaru academic year 2014/2015. The statements of problem of this research are :1) how is students’ interest in playing Scrabble; 2) how is students’vocabulary mastery; and 3) is there any correlation between students’ interest in playing Scrabble and students’ vocabulary mastery. The objectives of this research are to know students’ interest in playing scrabble,to know students’ vocabulary mastery, and to find out whether there is a correlation between students’ interest in playing scrabble and students’ vocabulary mastery. The population of this research is the students in the eleventh gradeof MAN Kotabaru academic year 2014/2015. The technique used in taking sample is random sampling. Therefore, the sample is the students ofXI IPA 3, XI IPS 1, and XI Agama as representatives of each major. To collect the data, the writer uses some techniques, namely questionnaire and written test. the questionaire is used to know how the students’ interest in playing Scrabble, while test is used to find out how the students’ vocabulary mastery. Then, all the data are analyzed quantitatively. The result of this research shows that the mean score of students' interest in playing Scrabble is 11,87 that means in low category. Students vocabulary mastery is in fair category because the average score of written test is 56,31. By using the Contingency Coefficient Correlation formula, The Phi value for the correlation between students’ interest in playing Scrabbleand students’vocabulary mastery is 0,511 which is higher than the r value which means that there is a correlation between students’ interest in playing Scrabble and students’vocabulary mastery.
