Advisor: Nani Hizriani, MA. Keywords: Word formation, analysis, Nicholas Sparks, The Last Song This study is conducted to analyse word formation used in Nicholas Sparks’ novel “The Last Song”. The statement of problems of this study are: what kinds of word formation processes are used in the novel “The Last Song” by Nicholas Sparks and what kind of word formation is most dominantly found in the novel “The Last Song” by Nicholas Sparks. The subject of this study is Nicholas Sparks’ novel “The Last Song”. The object of this study is the kinds of word formation used in Nicholas Sparks’ novel “The Last Song”. Because it is a library research, there is no instrument used in collecting data except the writer himself. The data collection procedure in this study is divided into four phases: collecting, confirming, analysing, and classifying. Then, all the data are analysed descriptively by relating the findings to some theories about word formation in the purpose of verification. The result of this study shows that all the types of word formation are used in “The Last Song” by Nicholas Sparks, namely derivation, compounding, clipping, backformation, blending, coinage, borrowing, loan translation, internal modification, suppletion, onomatopoeia, and reduplication. While, the most dominantly used word formation in the novel is derivation with the total number 1066 of 2154 data.
