ABSTRAK

English Education Department,Faculty ofTarbiyahand Teachers Training.Advisor: Hj. Noor Maulidiyah, MA. Keywords: Correlation, mastery, simple present tense, writing descriptive text This research describesthe correlation between the mastery of simple present tense and writing descriptive text of the eleventh grade students at MAN 3 Banjarmasin academic year 2014/2015. The problem that should be answered in this research is: Do the better students master simple present tense the better they write descriptive text? The population of this research is all of the eleventh grade students of MAN 3 Banjarmasin academic year 2014/2015. The sample of this research is about 20% of the population (42 students) which is 7 students are taken from in each class. The kind of this research is quantitative approach. The techniques of data collection are test and questionnaire. The test includes some items about comprehending simple present tense and some others are about applying simple present tense into descriptive text. The questionnaire consists of the students’ perception about simple present tense and descriptive text. Thequestionnaire is used to support the result of the test. The result of the research shows that the correlation value (rxy) between the mastery of simple present tense and writing descriptive textis 0.803, it indicates very strong correlation level. However, the comprehension of descriptive text is not only influenced by their mastery of simple present tense, but it can also be influenced by other factors based on the result of measuring Determinant Coefficient. From the questions that asked about the students’ perception about simple present tense and descriptive text, the highest percentage is always option C, which means that the students have good level in understanding each item. Then, from the questions that asked the students’ knowledge about simple present tense and descriptive text, most of students choose the right answers. Therefore, it can be concluded that most of the students have good knowledge about simple present tense and descriptive text.
