Thesis, English Department, Tarbiyah Faculty and Teacher Training. Advisor: Drs. Saadillah, M.Pd. Key words: vocabulary, mastery, mind mapping. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 Kelumpang Hilir, Serongga, Kotabaru academic year 2014/2015. This research is aimed to describe a significant difference between students’ vocabulary mastery by using mind mapping and without using mind mapping and to find out whether using mind mapping technique is effective or not in developing students’ vocabulary mastery. The design of the research is experimental research. The population is the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Kelumpang Hilir, Serongga, Kotabaru academic year 2014/2015. In selecting the sample, the writer uses random sampling from class A until F of the seventh grade students are chosen as the sample. The subject of the research is 40 students which is divided into two classes. 20 students for experimental class and 20 students for control class. The object of the research is the ability of the seventh grade students in developing vocabulary of SMPN 1 Kelumpang Hilir. To collect the data, the writer uses some technique such as observation, written test, interview and documentary. All the data are collected, then processed systematically through editing, scoring, tabulating, and interpreting. After that, all the data are analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. T-test is used to analysis the difference between the students’ vocabulary mastery by using mind mapping and without using mind mapping. Based on the analysis, the writer finds that the result of the calculation using t-test ( ) is 3.38 with at degree of freedom (df) 38 in significance level 5% = 2.02 and also 1% = 2.71. Thus, > = 2.71 < 3.38 > 2.02. It means t-test ( ) is higher than ( ) and indicates that H0 is rejected and consequently the Ha is accepted. So that, there is obvious significant difference between the teaching vocabulary using mind mapping and without using mind mapping.
