ABSTRAK

This research describes the correlation between the phonemictranscription mastery and thepronunciation of englishdepartment students Antasari State Institute for Islamic Studies Banjarmasin academic year 2013-2014.The problems that should be answered in this research are: (1). How is the English pronunciation of the students of English Education Department (PBI), Antasari State Institute for Islamic Studies Banjarmasin from the point of view of segmental feature?, (2). How is the ability of the students of English Education Department (PBI), Antasari State Institute for Islamic Studies Banjarmasin in the phonemic transcription? (3). Is there any correlation between the phonemic transcription mastery and the English pronunciation on the students of English Education Department (PBI), Antasari State Institute for Islamic Studies Banjarmasin? The subjects of the research are 60students of 6th semester at English Education Department (PBI), Antasari State Institute for Islamic Studies Banjarmasinacademic year 2013/2014. The object of this research are the phonemic transcription mastery and the English pronunciation on the students, and the correlation between them. To collect the data, the writer uses written andoral test. Then, all the data are analyzed descriptively, quantitatively.The next step is data analyzing, to define the correlation degree of the phonemic transcription mastery and the English pronunciation on the students, classifying students’ score using the following criteria as the standard score, determining the mean, making working table, defining the normality test, determining the degree of rxy, going to process and analyze them by applying the data in correlation formula and then re-process the data by using SPSS-17.The next step is to test hypothesis, consulting the degree of correlation result (rxy) and the degree of coefficient correlation product moment table, interpreting the result and making conclusion, interpreting the result by referring to rough standard, the last step, there is or there is no correlation between two variables that can be seen in scatter diagram. The result of the research indicates that thepronunciation of the students are in the level of “good”, and their phonemic transcription mastery is Average. The result of the research shows that the correlation value (rxy) between the PhonemicTranscription Mastery and thePronunciation is 0.457. For N= 60 is 0.254 for 5% significance degree and 0.330 for 1% significance degree. It means there is a fair or moderate correlation between the phonemic transcription mastery and the student’s pronunciation
