ABSTRAK

This case study is conducted in order to investigate teaching techniques used by native English-speaking teacher at English Conversation Club in SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Banjarmasin. The research questions of this research are: 1. What are the teaching techniques used by the native English-speaking teacher at English Conversation Club in SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Banjarmasin?, 2. How did the native English-speaking teacher apply those teaching techniques at English Conversation Club in SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Banjarmasin? The subject of this research is a native English-speaking teacher which is a grantee of Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Program placed in SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Banjarmasin. The objects of this research are teaching techniques used by the native English-speaking teacher and how the teacher applied them at English Conversation Club in SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Banjarmasin. To collect the data, the writer uses three techniques: direct observation, interview, and field notes. Data processing in this research is divided into two phases: editing and summarizing. Then, to analyze the data, the writer uses descriptive qualitative analysis. The result of the research shows that there are sixteen techniques used by the native English-speaking teacher at English Conversation Club in SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Banjarmasin, they are: composition, conversation practice, creative adaptation, deductive application of rule, getting students to self-correct, grammar game, language games, peer correction, positive suggestion, question-and-answer drill, reflection on experience, repetition drill, role reversal, small group task, structured feedback, and use words in sentences. The teacher applied those techniques in their common implementational way – following the theories, but there are techniques which are modified by her so it can be presented more communicatively. There is also a principle of her in teaching at ECC, which is never use students’ native language whatever it costs. This principle makes her to automatically neglect certain feature carried by particular technique.
